Jay's special is a sandwich made on sourdough bread. Let me tell you something, there is only one loaf of sourdough bread in the town of Nappanee. Luckily, I was at the store early in the morning and got a loaf fresh out of the oven and had to cut it on my own at home because it had to cool. They ought to make more loaves because it was delicious.
My mom has made Jay's Specials since I was younger, so I had to call her up tonight and ask her where she got her recipe. She said they serve it at the Gadsden Hotel in Douglas, Arizona and she used to order it all the time. It's pretty simple really. You just butter to slices of sourdough bread, put on roast beef, provolone cheese, and a couple slices of tomatoes and toast it in a hot skillet. The cheese will melt and it is a delicious warm sandwich.
Do you know about the Gadsden hotel? It was opened in 1907 and named after the Gadsden purchase. It is five stories high and has a beautiful marble staircase in the huge lobby. It's very beautiful and has a lot of history. Movies have been filmed there and even Eleanor Roosevelt has stayed there.
Anyway, I brought up to Adam that you sure do have a lot of Native American names here in Indiana (Mishawaka, Nappanee, Wawasee, Papakeechie, Shipshewana, Kokomo) and I have NEVER seen a Native American here. So I had to do some research to find out why. First of all, Indiana was the name given to the Indiana Territory by congress in 1800. It means "Land of Indians." In 1838, the US Government gave them a territory in Northwestern Oklahoma and they joined the Trail of Tears and headed west. There are still some descendants of the Miami Indians that still live in Indiana today. This is what I picked up quickly online, anyway. But you'll find that every town and lake has a Native American name.
Both of my girls went swimming TWICE today. They are tired little girls. I got to get my picture taken with the busy little Emilie who acts like she might skip crawling all together and just walk instead... tear.
When Aubrie swims a lot, it means a rough go between dinner and bedtime. She got a time out today for not cleaning up her toys and when her timeout was over, I went back to the step I left her on to find her visiting with Gaga. (Adam's grandfather). I should've shushed him away and set her back on the step, but she is so smitten with him, it was so fun to watch her interact with him. He's so quiet and just sits back and watches the show, and to her, that means she has to work hard to get his time and attention. He was sitting back there in a chair and she climbed up and sat right next to him and started talking to him. (I took most of the pictures through the screen)
I think this will be the last entry for a couple of days. Tomorrow is our last full day at the lake and Sunday we travel. I hope everyone has a good weekend! Love to all! Pin It Now!
I Love these Pictures! They are priceless. They are snap shot that will be forever in your families memories. I would love to see the girls.
